Self Wright

Asides

Just finished importing two old Tumblr blogs (each from roughly 4-5 years ago), one under my name and one … not.

So there’s suddenly a lot more content at this blog, in 2014-2015 !

(of course, it lacks tagging etc, but, it exists … all part of my current plan to aggregate bits and pieces of my digital life into this WordPress blog …)

Mostly just for my future self, would be interesting to see how this changes in (say) five years.

  1. Lamy Safari (x2, oldest one is from 2012 !)
  2. TWSBI Eco (Fine and Extra-Fine)
  3. Faber-Castell Ambition (imho, the smoothest writing one of the bunch)
  4. Platinum Preppy (x2, currently with blue and purple ink cartridges)
  5. Muji fountain pen (didn’t like it at all)
  6. Muji 0.38mm gel pens (a bunch, both black and colored)
  7. Baron Fig Squire (the only rollerball on this list)
  8. Pilot Frixxion 4-color gel multi pen

I’ve started a new blog or a new online journal so many times, some private, some public, that I’ve really lost track of all of them. This is mildly complicated because some of them were pseudonymous.

At least on my (now deprecated?) static blog I tried to merge together older content, but I just discovered an older WordPress blog, that can best be described as “explorations in programming“.

At some point, I’m going to try to merge them together (I’m guessing that means exporting-and-importing), but it’s still a bit of a revelation to discover all this stuff I wrote, almost exactly five years ago (!)

Edit (July 11 2019): It turned out to be fairly straightforward to export the old blog and re-import it into this one — the hard part was figuring out what my login/password was, five years ago! — so this blog now goes back to 2014!

I had slowly gotten used to the flavored Chobani yogurts (strawberry, peach ….) but the one I liked most of all was the honey flavored one.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have easy access to this anymore … but I did have plain yogurt around, and I did have honey, and … I mixed them together and it tasted pretty good!

So — I’m clocking in at a few times a day now, gotta slow down, but — this is my new addiction!

I saw the movie when it came out, and then for a second time last month, with my parents. If you’ve seen it, you might have found yourself wondering, “what’s up with those poem fragments? are they real?” Well, wonder no further, and thank the random person on the internet who collected them1 (and perhaps also (cough!) your humble curator who stumbled across them).

P.S. It turns out they were all written by Wes Anderson himself

P.P.S. Yes, “Boy with Apple” is obviously not real either

From a usenet posting little less than a decade ago1, something that explains a common pattern in “high-level flame wars” on the internet …

I think the term you’re looking for is “willfully ignorant” or perhaps “stubbornly ignorant”. They’re actually too fundamentally intelligent to be truly stupid, but the intelligence is being perverted in the service of an active ignorance that seeks reinforcement of its own preconceptions, rather than being open to the subtle panic that inevitably arises when learning something truly new & different.

Something random I made with ArtRage on an iPad …

Apropos of the recent article on how “Googling for stuff makes you feel smarter”, here is Umberto Eco on something similar:

A student makes hundreds of pages of photocopies and takes them home, and the manual labor he exercises in doing so gives him the impression that he possesses the work. Owning the photocopies exempts the student from actually reading them. This sort of vertigo of accumulation, a neocapitalism of information, happens to many.

(sound familiar?)

It’s interesting to see what music the baby sleeps to. Various successes so far include the Coraline soundtrack and the Ride of the Valkyries (!)
