Progress in America

Went to Disney World

One of the exhibits was a slightly reworked version of a 1960s era show -- the "Carousel of Progress"

Essentially, it takes you through several formative decades in America, starting from just before 1900 and ending in the 1960s.

And there was always something new happening, some new transformative aspect of daily life.

The modification to the 1960s version was to add a "today section" featuring VR goggles and voice-controlled ovens (spoiler: the ovens misbehave).

There is a -- laughably -- obvious sense in which not a lot happened after the 1960s !! Or at least, not in a proportional sense.

We don't have "Progress-Land" anymore, we do have "Tomorrow-Land", but even that is really "retro Tomorrow-land", the tomorrow of yester-year.

I understand "It's time to build" not as a call not for random acts of creation, but as a way to resurrect this journey that took place earlier, and then ... basically ... stalled.

What will it take to get it started again?

Or -- really -- will we do what it takes to get it started again?
